A dore bar is a semi-pure alloy of gold and silver, usually created at the site of a mine. It is then transported to a refinery for further purification. The proportions of silver and gold can vary widely. Dore bars weigh as much as 25 kg. Crude silver containing a small amount of gold, obtained after removing lead in a cupelling furnace. Dore bars are first weighed and melted to ensure the metal is homogenous, that is, that there are no pockets of high or low purity within the bar. A sample is taken from this melted dore and assayed to determine the exact amount of gold and silver present.
Although silver doré bars are generally made from silver miningmaterial, they are also made by melting silver jewelry into single bars.
